About The Greater Cincinnati Foundation

About Greater Cincinnati Foundation

As the region’s leading community foundation, Greater Cincinnati Foundation connects people with purpose in an eight-county region in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. GCF is leading the charge toward a more vibrant Greater Cincinnati for everyone – now, and for generations to come.

Greater Cincinnati Foundation believes the greatest change happens when people come together—in partnership, collaboration and generosity. Our role is to align the right players and then coordinate their efforts and contributions to make the biggest impact.

We bring together:

  • Donors - Bound by a common desire to advance organizations transforming our region and the world.
  • Nonprofits - Changing outcomes throughout our community.
  • Changemakers - Working to solve our region’s greatest needs.

Our Mission

As a trusted and connected partner, we inspire generous people to invest in a more equitable and vibrant region, now and for generations to come.

How does it work?

Generous donors establish funds at GCF, with gifts during their lifetime or through bequests, to carry out their charitable goals. GCF’s Board, along with experts from the community, manages funds by investing wisely to ensure the assets are protected and grow over time. As of 2017, GCF is the 35th largest U.S. community foundation with net assets of $636 million.

Where does the money go?

Because of the generosity of our donors, GCF can make investments across our region through grants and community leadership activities.

What areas do you serve?

GCF serves eight counties in the Tristate region: Butler, Clermont, Hamilton and Warren in Ohio; Boone, Campbell, and Kenton in Kentucky; and Dearborn County, Indiana.

Who’s who?

GCF is directed by a 18-member volunteer Board comprised of leaders of diverse, representative local groups and one legal counsel.

The day-to-day operations are carried out by the staff, led by President/CEO Ellen M. Katz.

Throughout its 50-plus year history, volunteer committees and task forces have provided important input and guidance to the work of the Foundation in specific areas such as investment strategy and grant review, as well as for special projects.

How can I help?

GCF has many ways to you can get involved. Whether it is by starting a fund, giving to our Empowering Communities Annual Fund, advising your clients on their charitable giving, joining the efforts of our Women's Fund or volunteering on a committee, GCF has thrived because of the generosity of time and resources of our community.

What is a community foundation?

A community foundation, like Greater Cincinnati Foundation, is a tax-exempt public charity created by and for the people in a region so that people with philanthropic interests can support issues they care about – now or through their estates.

Community foundations help individuals, families, and businesses establish charitable funds using a variety of assets. Grants are made from these funds to nonprofit groups that meet the charitable goals of the donor.

Greater Cincinnati Foundation is confirmed in compliance with National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations.
